How to Choose the Right Therapist: Why Feeling Comfortable Matters Most

Deciding to see a therapist takes courage. Then comes the next question that stops many people: who should I see?
Most of us look at qualifications, price and location first. Those matter. But research keeps pointing to something less obvious as one of the strongest predictors of whether therapy actually works for you: how comfortable you feel with the person sitting across from you.
What research says about the therapist and client relationship

In therapy, the working relationship between you and your therapist is called the therapeutic alliance. It covers three things: whether you trust each other, whether you agree on what you're working towards, and whether you're on the same page about how to get there.
A large meta-analysis of nearly 300 studies found that the strength of this alliance is consistently linked to better outcomes, across different types of therapy and different concerns. In other words, the specific technique matters, but the relationship it happens in matters just as much.
This makes sense when you think about it. Therapy asks you to talk about things you may never have said out loud. If you're holding back because something doesn't feel right, even the best approach in the world will struggle to reach what needs healing.
Why this matters even more in hypnotherapy
In clinical hypnotherapy, you're guided into a state of deep, focused relaxation so you can work with the patterns sitting beneath conscious thought. That state comes much more easily when you feel safe.
If part of you is on guard, wondering whether you can trust the person guiding you, your mind naturally stays alert. When you feel at ease, it becomes much easier to settle, open up and allow change to happen.
It's also worth knowing that under hypnosis you stay in control throughout. You won't do or say anything you don't want to. But feeling comfortable with your hypnotherapist helps you get the most from every session, whether you're working on anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks or fears and phobias.
Signs a therapist may be a good fit for you
There's no single right answer, but after a first conversation, notice whether:
You felt listened to, not rushed or judged
They explained their approach in a way you understood
You could ask questions without feeling awkward
Their style suited you, whether you prefer gentle and reflective or structured and practical
You left feeling a little lighter, or at least hopeful
Something in you would be willing to come back
If several of these are a "no", that's useful information, not a failure.
It's okay to meet a few therapists before deciding
Here in Malaysia, many of us feel paiseh about this. We worry that meeting someone and not continuing is rude, or that we should just "make it work" with the first person we see.
Please know this: good therapists expect it, and they want you to find the right fit, even if it isn't them. Meeting two or three therapists for a consultation is not being fussy. It's making a careful decision about someone you'll be trusting with very personal parts of your life.
Think of it like finding a family doctor you trust. You wouldn't feel bad for looking around.
Questions you can ask during a consultation
A consultation is your chance to interview the therapist as much as they get to understand you. You might ask:
What's your experience working with concerns like mine?
What approach would you use, and what does a typical session look like?
How many sessions do people usually need?
Do you offer online sessions, physical sessions, or both?
What happens if I feel it isn't working?
At Yu Therapy, our team brings different strengths across clinical hypnotherapy, counselling and clinical psychology. You can get to know our therapists here before you book.
Free consultations from 8 to 18 October for World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October, and this year we want to make that first step easier.
From 8 to 18 October 2026, Yu Therapy is offering free 30 minute online consultations. It's a relaxed, no pressure conversation where you can:
Share what you've been going through
Learn whether hypnotherapy, counselling or another approach might suit you
Get a feel for whether you're comfortable with the therapist
There's no obligation to continue afterwards. If you've been putting off reaching out, or you want to see whether a particular therapist feels right, this is a good time to start.
Slots are limited, so we recommend booking early.
Frequently asked questions
Is it rude to switch therapists?
Not at all. Finding the right fit is part of the process, and experienced therapists understand this.
How many therapists should I consult before choosing?
There's no fixed number. Many people know after one or two conversations. Trust how you feel afterwards.
Is an online consultation as useful as meeting in person?
For a first conversation, online works very well. It lets you speak from somewhere comfortable and get a sense of the therapist's style. Sessions after that can be online or at our rooms in Damansara Intan, Petaling Jaya, or SetiaWalk, Puchong.
What if I'm not sure which type of therapy I need?
That's exactly what a consultation is for. You don't need to have it figured out beforehand.
Taking the first step
The right therapist won't make your problems disappear overnight. But they will make it feel safe enough to start working on them, and that's often where real change begins.
If you've been waiting for a sign, consider this it. Book your free consultation before 18 October.
